Pope Francis Receives President of Cameroon

Discussed important contribution offered by the Church for country’s development, human rights, peaceful coexistence among religions

Pope Francis received in audience the president of the Republic of Cameroon, Paul Biya, this morning.
According to a statement released by the Holy See Press Office, the discussions were cordial, and highlighted the good existing relations between the Holy See and Cameroon.
They highlighted, according to the statement, the «important contribution offered by the Church for the development of the country, especially in the fields of education and healthcare.»
«Recognizing the peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among various religions,» the statement continued, «they spoke about the importance of favoring national cohesion, whilst giving precedence to the richness of various historical and cultural traditions of the country, in respect for human rights and the rights of minorities.”
The Pope and President Biya also exchanged views on themes of international affairs, with particular reference to the region’s current challenges.
After meeting with the Pope, the President of Cameroon met with Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.
