The list of the participants in the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for Amazonia (October 6-27), was published on Saturday morning, September 21, 2019, on the theme: “New Pathways for the Church and for An Integral Ecology.”
The Assembly will have 185 members (Cf. alphabetical list below), of whom 114 are Bishops, who will gather under the presidency of Pope Francis, and auditors, including the former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon, sign of the UN’s concern for Amazonia and the indigenous peoples and its desire to listen to the voice of the Church. It seems good that in the first presence of the UN at a Synod is the presence of a former Secretary-General.
We recall that last September 7, Pope Francis appointed the “delegate” Presidents:
- Cardinal Baltazar Enrique Porras Cardozo, Apostolic Administrator of Caracas, and Archbishop of Merida, Venezuela,
- Cardinal Pedro Ricardo Barreto Jimeno, Archbishop of Huancayo, Peru, and Vice-President of the Pan-Amazonian Ecclesial Network (REPAM).,
- Brazilian Cardinal Joao Braz de Aviz, Prefect of the Roman Dicastery for Consecrated Life.
The general rapporteur is Brazilian Cardinal Claudio Hummes, Archbishop Emeritus of Sao Paul, Brazil, President of the Episcopal Commission for Amazonia of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil and President of REPAM.
The two general secretaries are Canadian Jesuit-Cardinal-Elect Michael Czerny, Under-Secretary of the Migrants and Refugees Section of the Dicastery for the Service of Integral Human Development, and Monsignor David Martinez de Aguirre Guinea, Dominican, Apostolic Vicar of Puerto Maldonado, Peru, who welcomed the Pope in that city, where he met with indigenous populations.
In total, 114 Bishops will represent the Church of this Pan-Amazonian region (Antilles and Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela), as well as Monsignor Emmanuel Lafont, Bishop of Cayenne, (French Guiana) and Monsignor Dominique-Marie You, Bishop of the Most Holy Conception of Araguaia, Brazil.
The 13 heads of Dicasteries of the Roman Curia also have the right to take part in the Assembly presided over by Pope Francis.
Some thirty members appointed by the Pope will also sit in the Assembly: Archbishops and Bishops, Members of the Roman Curia, parish priests, Directors of reviews and other apostolates, including French-speaking Cardinal-Elect Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, Archbishop of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo; Jean-Claude Hollerich, Archbishop of Luxembourg, Luxembourg, and President of COMECE, but also Monsignor Marcel Madila Basanguka, Archbishop of Kananga (D.R. Congo) and President of the Association of Episcopal Conferences of Central Africa (ACEAC), and Monsignor Lionel Gendron, Bishop of Saint-Jean- Longueuil, Canada.
As is customary for Roman Synods, experts and 55 auditors, men and women, will also take part.
In the main, the experts come from Latin America, representing the spirituality of the indigenous peoples., the History of the Church in Amazonia, or social anthropology, for example, an Indian priest of the Zapotec peoples.
Among the men and women auditors are members of local ethnic groups, such as Tapi Yawalapiti, Chief of 16 tribes of Alto-Xingu, in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, as well as Frenchman of Indian origin Aloysius Rajkumar John, Secretary-General of Caritas Internationalis.
As is also customary, fraternal delegates will represent the Presbyterian, Evangelical and Anglican Churches of South America, in addition to a dozen special envoys, including the former United Nations Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-Moon (South Korea); Jean-Pierre Dutilleux (Belgium), Co-Founder and Honorary President of the “Virgin Forest” Association; Josianne Gauthier (Canada) Secretary-General of International Cooperation for Development and Solidarity (CIDSE); Carlos Alfonso Nobre, 2007 Noble Peace Prize <representing> the Group of Inter-Governmental Experts on climate change (GIEC), and Jeffrey D. Sachs, Professor os Sustainable Development at Columbia University (United States).
For his part, the Prefect of the Holy See’s Dicastery for Communication, Paolo Ruffini, will be the President of the Commission for Information on the Synod, and the Jesuit Giacomo Costa, Director of the review Aggiornamenti Sociali [Social Updatings], Secretary.
Four personalities are full members of this Commission, of which one is a woman, Sister Maria Irene Lopes Dos Santos, Carmelite missionary of the Child Jesus, Assessor of the Episcopal Commission for Amazonia of the Conference of Bishops of Brazil.
