The Holy Father has appointed Bishop of Augsburg (Germany) Mons. Bertram Meier, of the clergy of Augsburg, until now diocesan Administrator and Dean of the Cathedral Chapter of the same diocese.
Archbishop Bertram Meier
Archbishop Meier was born on July 20, 1960, in Buchloe, in the diocese of Augsburg.
He carried out his philosophical-theological studies first in Augsburg and then at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, being a pupil of the Pontifical German-Hungarian College.
He received priestly ordination on 10 October 1985 in Rome, incardinating himself in the clergy of Augsburg.
He later continued his studies, concluding them in 1989 with a doctorate in theology.
He was vice-parish priest in his diocese for a year, before entering the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in 1990. A year later he returned to the diocese, carrying out the ministry of vice-parish priest and then of parish priest and dean in Neu-Ulm.
From 1996 to 2001 he served in the First Section of the Secretariat of State. In this period he was also Vice-Rector of the Teutonic Holy Field and Professor of Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University.
In 2000 he was named Canon of the Augsburg Cathedral Chapter and also became Chaplain of His Holiness. Since 2009 he is Prelate of His Holiness.
After his return to the Diocese he worked as President of various diocesan commissions and, from 2007 to 2014, he was also Representative of the Bavarian Episcopal Conference in the National Committee of Catholics in Bavaria.
In 2014 he became Head of the Pastoral Office of the Diocese of Augsburg.
Since 2007 he has been Preacher of the Cathedral and since 2012 Dean of the Chapter. Furthermore, he was appointed Episcopal Vicar for Ecumenism and for Interreligious Dialogue. Finally, since 2018 he has been Director of the Pontifical Diocesan Missionary Works.
As Augsburg was a vacant seat, in July 2019 the Cathedral Chapter elected him diocesan administrator.
