Cardinal Jose Jesus Pimiento Rodriguez, of the Title of St. John Chrysostom at Monte Sacro Alto, Archbishop Emeritus of Manizales, Colombia, passed away yesterday. The Holy Father sent his condolences in a telegram sent to the Archbishop of the city, Monsignor Gonzalo Restrepo Restrepo.
The Pope is in the midst of his Apostolic Journey to Africa, taking place from September 4-10, during which he will visit Mozambique, Madagascar and Mauritius.
After arriving in Mozambique yesterday afternoon, this morning, Pope Francis celebrated Holy Mass in the Apostolic Nunciature of Maputo, the country’s capital, where he dedicated a few words to the two deceased cardinals.

I received with sorrow the news of the death of Cardinal Jose de Jesus Pimiento Rodriguez, Archbishop Emeritus of Manizales, and I express to Your Excellency my heartfelt sympathy, begging you to transmit it to the relatives of the deceased Prelate and to all those that form part of that Archdiocese.
Likewise, on remembering this centenary Pastor who gave his life to God and to the Church, working with courage for peace and the common good, I offer intercessory prayers for his eternal rest, so that the Lord Jesus may grant him to enter the eternal abode, and I impart to all the Apostolic Blessing.
