In a telegram sent to the Apostolic Nuncio in Guatemala, Archbishop Nicolas Henry Marie Denis Thevenin, by Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, on the Pope’s behalf, the Holy Father expressed his spiritual closeness to those suffering.
He also thanked those ceaselessly working to rescue and assist those tragically affected, asking the Lord to convey on them hope and consolation and imparted his Apostolic Blessing.
Here is the Vatican-provided translation of the Pope’s telegram:
HIS EXCELLENCY MSGR. NICOLAS THEVENIN
APOSTOLIC NUNCIO IN GUATEMALA
THE HOLY FATHER, DEEPLY SORROWED TO LEARN THE SAD NEWS OF THE VIOLENT ERUPTION OF THE FUEGO VOLCANO, WHICH HAS CLAIMED NUMEROUS VICTIMS AND CAUSED ENORMOUS MATERIAL DAMAGE AFFECTING A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF INHABITANTS IN THE AREA, OFFERS PRAYERS FOR THE ETERNAL REPOSE OF THE DECEASED AND FOR ALL THOSE WHO SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES OF THIS NATURAL DISASTER.
I ASK YOUR EXCELLENCY TO CONVEY HIS HOLINESS’ CONDOLENCES, TOGETHER WITH EXPRESSIONS OF CONSOLATION, TO THE RELATIVES WHO MOURN THE LOSS OF THEIR LOVED ONES, AS WELL AS HIS SPIRITUAL CLOSENESS TO THE WOUNDED AND THOSE WHO WORK TIRELESSLY TO HELP THE VICTIMS, WHILE ASKING THE LORD TO BESTOW UPON THEM ALL THE GIFTS OF SOLIDARITY, SPIRITUAL SERENITY AND CHRISTIAN HOPE, AS A PLEDGE OF WHICH HE IMPARTS HIS HEARTFELT APOSTOLIC BLESSING.
CARDINAL PIETRO PAROLIN
SECRETARY OF STATE OF HIS HOLINESS
