Pope Francis’ recent interview with Eugenio Scalfari, the atheist founder of the Italian daily La Repubblica, has been removed from the Vatican website, Vatican spokesman Fr. Federico Lombardi confirmed today.
The Oct. 1 interview, which was also published in L’Osservatore Romano, was criticised for its inaccuracies after it emerged that Scalfari had not taped it or taken notes.
The Holy Father, aware that he might be misinterpreted, is said to have «regretted» its publication in the Vatican newspaper.
Observers pointed especially to inaccuracies in the interview concerning the Pope’s recollection of what happened during the conclave, and many queried his comments on conscience.
The Pope has not given any new interviews since its publication.
