Today, «new religious groups» are dominant in the Mexican capital, Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera told the Inter-American Congress for Urban Pastoral Care in an address.

He also highlighted the problem of inequality and social exclusion as a sign of urban poverty.

Mexico has some of the widest disparities in wealth among its rich and poor citizens. Mexico City is no exception: Its close to 9 million residents include 2.5 million who live in extreme poverty.

Cardinal Rivera proposed that the values of urban culture, characterized by individualist and materialist tendencies, be revised, and that the Church modernize its pastoral structures to deal with the situation.
