Obasanjo made that announcement Wednesday during his nationwide address marking the 42nd anniversary of Nigerian independence.

The president said that those sentenced under Islamic law can appeal to the High Court. «The appeal courts will guarantee justice,» he said, according to Misna missionary agency.

«We fully understand the concerns of Nigerians and friends of Nigeria, but we cannot imagine that any of our nationals will be stoned to death,» he added. «It has never happened and never will.»

Obasanjo’s words come at a time of growing international pressure to save Amina Lawal, a woman sentenced to death by stoning by a court of the state of Katsina.
