The prelates at their annual plenary meeting last week agreed to set up an ad hoc committee to examine ways of following up on WYD 2002 and the third Continental Congress on Vocations.

The ad hoc committee, to be composed of four bishops, will have the mandate «to review the pastoral impact as well as proposals following WYD and the Vocations Congress; to monitor and encourage youth ministry and vocation work throughout the country,» a statement from the bishops’ conference said.

World Youth Day gathered thousands of young people in Toronto from July 23-28 to meet with John Paul II (www.wyd2002.org). The Third Continental Congress on Vocations gathered promoters of vocations to the priestly and consecrated life in Montreal from April 18-21 (www.vocations2002.org).

Also, the bishops expressed their solidarity with the Canadian Council of Churches in seeking a peaceful resolution to the situation in Iraq. The prelates will urge the Canadian government to continue working for a peaceful solution.
