In the letter, Archbishop Renato Martino, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, underlines the positive role of religions in building peace in the troubled African country.

Echoing the appeal of the Ivory Coast’s religious leaders at the start of this year, Archbishop Martino expressed the hope that «the different agents of the crisis will question themselves on their own responsibilities in halting the conflict and commit themselves to the promotion of authentic peace, founded on justice and forgiveness.»

Fighting broke out in the Ivory Coast following a coup attempt Sept. 19.
