Bishop Named for Johannesburg

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, APRIL 8, 2003 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II appointed Archbishop Buti Joseph Tlhagale of Bloemfontein, South Africa, the new bishop of Johannesburg.

He is replacing Bishop Reginald Joseph Orsmond, founder of the famous «South African Boys Town,» who died last May 19 at age 71.

The Johannesburg Diocese has 6 million inhabitants, of whom 700,000 are Catholics. They are served by 164 priests, 613 religious and 39 permanent deacons.

The new leader of the diocese will keep the title of archbishop.
