At a press conference Thursday, Cardinal Angelo Sodano said: «The situation in Haiti causes us much concern.»
Rebels who had overrun half of Haiti seized another town today and closed in on the capital of Port-au-Prince, where looting erupted and supporters of embattled President Jean-Bertrand Aristide fired guns in the air, the Associated Press said.
In his statements reported by the Missionary Service News Agency, the cardinal also called for a more active U.N. role in the Mideast and Africa, especially in Congo and Uganda.
