VATICAN CITY, SEPT. 24, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI promised his prayers for the Polish families who lost loved ones in the Sept. 18 explosion at a coal mine in Silesia.

The Pope mentioned the tragedy at the end of the general audience on Wednesday. The death toll is at 17, while 35 miners are still in the hospital.

The Holy Father said in Polish that he was united «spiritually to the families of the victims and to the wounded.»

«I entrust all in prayer to Divine Mercy,» he said. «I pray for the eternal rest of the deceased, healing for the wounded, and the gift of fortitude, which comes from faith, for all their loved ones.»

«May God protect all workers from such tragedies,» the Pontiff added. «I wish you all strength of spirit.»
