Cardinal Levada Named to Latin America Commission

VATICAN CITY, OCT.8, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI named Cardinal William Levada, the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, as a counselor to the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.

The Vatican press office announced the appointment today. Cardinal Antonio Cañizares, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments, and Archbishop Jean-Luis Bruguès, secretary of the Congregation for Catholic Education, were similarly named as counselors to the commission.

The Pope also named 10 prelates as members of the commission:

— Cardinal Nicolás de Jesús López Rodríguez, archbishop of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic;
— Cardinal Juan Sandoval Iñiguez, archbishop of Guadalajara, Mexico;
— Cardinal Marc Ouellet, archbishop of Quebec, Canada;
— Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer, archbishop of São Paulo, Brazil;

— Archbishop Mario Antonio Cargnello of Salta, Argentina;
— Archbishop Héctor Rubén Aguer of La Plata, Argentina;
— Archbishop Nicolás Cotugno Fanizzi of Montevideo, Uruguay;
— Archbishop Geraldo Lyrio Rocha of Mariana, Brazil;

— Archbishop Raymundo Damasceno Assis of Aparecida, Brasil;
— Archbishop Lepoldo José Brenes Solorzano of Managua, Nicaragua;
— Archbishop Orlando Antonio Corrales Garcia of Santa Fe de Antioquia, Colombia;
— Coadjutor Archbishop Juan José Asenjo of Seville, Spain.
