Notre Dame Professor Tapped for Theology Commission

VATICAN CITY, NOV. 19, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI named Archbishop Manuel Monteiro de Castro, secretary of the Congregation for Bishops, and Archbishop Jean-Louis Bruguès, secretary of the Congregation for Catholic Education, as consultors of the Congregatin for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Archbishop Monteiro, 71, has been secretary of the Congregation for Bishops since July. Before then, he had been the apostolic nuncio in Spain since 2000.

Born in Portugal, he has a degree in Canon Law and entered the Holy See eiplomatic service in 1967.
 
Archbishop Bruguès, 65, is a native of France. After receiving degrees in economics and law, he entered the Dominicans in 1968.
 
He was appointed bishop of Angers, France, in 2000, and named secretary of the Congregation for Catholic Education in 2007.

The college of consultors of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith participates, with the members of the dicastery, in the weekly meetings dedicated to promoting and watching over the doctrine of faith and morality in the Church.

Theologian
 
Benedict XVI also appointed John C. Cavadini, professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, as a member of the International Theological Commission.
 
Cavadini is an associate professor and chair of the theology department and McGrath-Cavadini Director of the Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame.

He specializes in Patristics and theology of the Early Middle Ages. He has studied with special interest the theology of St. Augustine and the history of biblical exegesis, both in the East as well as the West.

The International Theological Commission serves as an advising body to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
