VATICAN CITY, JULY 22, 2011 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI expressed his sympathy today for the death of a brother of his Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.

On Thursday, the Pope’s closest collaborator was able to greet his brother Paolo, 81, who suffered a long illness, in the religious residence of the shrine of Trompone in Moncrivello, where he was hospitalized.

The Vatican’s semi-official newspaper L’Osservatore Romano called Paolo Bertone a «good-humored» man of profound Marian devotion, manifested in his frequent recitation of the rosary.

He was the third of eight children, and was also educated by the Salesians.

In a message sent to Cardinal Bertone, Benedict XVI expressed his closeness to the family and his prayers so that Paolo «will be able to share with the Risen Lord everlasting joy and peace.»

In 2009, Paolo received Benedict XVI as a guest in his home in Romano Canavese.

Paolo is survived by his wife Pina, his children Cristiano and Stefania, his siblings Valeriano and Mariuccia, in addition to Cardinal Bertone, and his nephews and grandchildren.
