(ZENIT News / Guatemala, 11.03.2026).- On August 22, the Curia of the Diocese of Santa Rosa de Lima in Guatemala reported a possible «Eucharistic manifestation» in the city of Cuilapa: a Sacred Host, after being placed in water, did not dissolve and instead developed red stains, which could be blood.
On Thursday, July 30, 2026, during a «Eucharistic Missionary Week,» organized by the parish, Mass was celebrated at a private school in Cuilapa, presided over by a priest who was assisting the parish priest during that week. During Communion, the celebrant observed a student — a teenager — who, upon returning to his seat after receiving Communion, took the Host out of his mouth. The priest quickly approached and managed to prevent him from dropping it on the floor.
The priest placed the Sacred Host in a glass vessel containing water and kept it in the chapel of the parish house, with the intention that it would dissolve, in accordance with standard practice. On August 6, it was observed that it had not dissolved, and red stains had appeared.
The Guatemalan Diocese of Santa Rosa de Lima, within whose jurisdiction the parish of Cuilapa falls, issued a written statement on August 22, signed by Father José Alejandro García, parish priest at the Cathedral of the Child God (Catedral del Niño Dios). The statement, authorized by the diocesan Bishop, Monsignor José Cayetano Parra, announced the formation of an investigative team. The team consists of a biologist, a physician with experience in similar cases, a psychologist, a nurse, a layman chosen from among the parish community, and a priest who is not part of the local presbyterate.
The team’s objective is to determine «whether the reddish stain is blood» and to clarify «whether certain human properties or characteristics are present in a piece of bread.» Father García noted that the process «will require time for study and reflection.»
Neither the multidisciplinary team nor the Bishop can confirm whether this is a Eucharistic miracle, as such a declaration falls under the authority of the Holy See. They have called for «prudence, prayer, and reflection» to avoid hasty conclusions that could «hinder the investigation.»
The Host has been kept in safekeeping since the news became public, and the priest has noted «greater participation by thousands of people» at the church — attending Mass, going to confession, and taking part in Eucharistic Adoration. This increase in sacramental participation «has been a rebirth for my community,» he stated, noting a strengthening of «faith in Jesus in the Eucharist, which is evident in the higher attendance of the faithful at Mass and Eucharistic Adoration.»
