VATICAN CITY, APRIL 25, 2012 (Zenit.org).- The Vatican Secretariat of State announced today that Benedict XVI created a commission of cardinals to investigate the recent problem of a series of confidential documents leaked to the press.

In a brief statement, the secretariat noted that «the Holy Father has ordered the creation of a Commission of Cardinals to undertake an authoritative investigation and throw light on these episodes.»

The commission «will act at all levels on the strength of its pontifical mandate,» the statement added.

Three retired cardinals are the members of the commission: Cardinal Julián Herranz, retired president of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts, Cardinal Jozef Tomko, retired prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, and Cardinal Salvatore De Giorgi, retired archbishop of Palermo, Italy.

The commission met Tuesday for its first meeting, the Vatican reported, «to establish the method and timetable for its activities.»
