VATICAN CITY, JULY 11, 2012 (Zenit.org).- The Diocese of Portsmouth, England, has been given a bishop: Monsignor Philip Anthony Egan, a priest of the Diocese of Shrewsbury.
The appointment was one of several announced today.
Philip Egan was born in Altrincham in the Diocese of Chester in 1955 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1984. Upon graduating in theology at Boston College in the United States, he served as professor of fundamental theology and academic dean at St. Mary’s College, Oscott in Birmingham, England. He succeeds Bishop Crispian Hollis, whose resignation from the pastoral care of the Diocese of Portsmouth the Holy Father accepted, upon having reached the age limit.
In India, Father Elias Gonsalves was appointed bishop of the Diocese of Amravati. Elias Gonsalves was born in Chulne in 1961 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1990. After finishing his studies in Bombay University and the Coady Institute in Canada, he served as pastor of several parishes. The Diocese of Amravati has been vacant November 2010 after Bishop Daniel Lourdes was appointed to the Diocese of Nashik, India.
The Holy Father appointed Bishop Antonio Carlos Altieri as archbishop of Passo Fundo, Brazil. Archbishop Altieri, who previously served as bishop of Caraguatatuba, succeeds Archbishop Pedro Ercilio Simon whose resignation was accepted by the Holy Father.
The Holy Father also appointed Bishop Marek Jedraszewski as archbishop of Lodz, Poland. The former auxiliary bishop of Poznan succeeds Archbishop Wladyslaw Ziolek, whose resignation was accepted by the Holy Father upon reaching the age limit.
