Pope Francis received Mr. Juan Manuel Santos Calderon, President of Colombia today in audience at the Vatican Apostolic Palace.
President Santos Calderon was in Rome for the canonization of Mother Laura Montoya Upegui, the first Colombian saint, during yesterday’s Mass in St. Peter’s Square. In a communique released by the Holy See Press Office, the Holy Father and the President of Colombia spoke on the Church’s work in providing services that assist human and spiritual progress of the country.
“The challenges that the country must face were taken into consideration, especially in regard to social inequalities,” the communique stated. “Reference to the undergoing process of peace and the victims of conflict was not overlooked, with the wishes that the parties involved carry on negotiations, inspired by a sincere search for the common good and for reconciliation. Finally, the Church’s commitment in favor of life and of families was emphasized.”
After the meeting with Pope Francis, the Colombian head of State also met with Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone who was accompanied by Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, secretary for Relations with States.
