A Vatican official has conveyed the Holy See’s admiration for the strength shown by the Filipino peoples in the face of tragic typhoon that struck last week.
Msgr. Paul Tighe, secretary of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, who is in Manila for the 2nd Catholic Social Media Summit, said that the Vatican admired the Filipino people’s generosity, care and solidarity in this time. Msgr. Tighe will be the keynote speaker at the summit, which will be held at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Manila.
Msgr. Tighe also highlighted the importance of social media during the disaster in informing the world on the situation and ways of assisting in relief efforts.
«Everybody in the world knows about the Philippines through social media. It allows the people to speak for themselves and tell their stories and to let the whole world know what help they could give,» he noted.
The Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications also said that the Vatican continued to mobilize efforts to help those in need in the Philippines.
«People there [in the Vatican] are very conscious [of what happened] not only in Rome but in the Church globally. There’s a sense of solidarity. Everybody is concerned about the Philippines, and [to know] what they can do to help,» he said.
«Show them through new media what you are doing and maybe they can support and help you,» he added.
