Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, director of the Holy See Press Office has confirmed that Cuban President Raul Castro will meet with Pope Francis on Sunday, May 10th.

In a communique released today, Fr. Lombardi said that the Holy Father "will receive in a strictly private meeting the President of the Republic of Cuba." He also stated that they will meet at the Pope's office, located in the Paul VI Hall.

"As we all know, President Raul Castro has publicly thanked the Pope for the role he played in the rapprochement between Cuba and the United States of America, and the Pope will visit the Caribbean island in September before going to the United States," Fr. Lombardi stated.

Pope Francis' visit to the island-nation is meant to provide support to both countries as they work on reestablishing diplomatic ties.
