Pope Francis gave thanks on September 15, 2019, for the recent prisoner exchange by Ukraine and Russia. The Holy Father’s remarks came after praying the Angelus with the crowds of pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square.

Last week, 33 Russians who were being held in Ukraine, landed in Moscow. On the same day, 35 Ukrainians, being held in Russia, landed in Kiev.

“Realized last week was the long-awaited exchange of prisoners between the Russian Federation and Ukraine,” Pope Francis said. “I rejoice for the persons liberated, who were able to embrace again their dear ones, and I continue to pray for a rapid end to the conflict and for lasting peace in Eastern Ukraine.”
