The Holy Father has appointed Professor Fabiola Gianotti, director general of the Conseil européen pour la recherche nucléaire (CERN) in Geneva (Switzerland), as ordinary member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.

Professor Fabiola Gianotti was born in Rome on October 29, 1960. She obtained her Ph.D. in experimental particle physics at the University of Milan in 1989. Since 1994 she has been a researcher at the Conseil européen pour la recherche nucléaire (CERN). In July 2012, during the seminar that formalized the discovery of the Higgs boson, she presented the results of the research. Since 2016 she has held the position of director-general of CERN, thus becoming the first woman to take on this role. She has been a member of several international scientific committees and of the Advisory Committee of the Secretary-General of the United Nations. She has received several honorary doctorates and international awards. She is a corresponding member of many Academies and author or co-author of a significant number of scientific publications.
