(ZENIT News / Managua-Rome, 01.14.2024).- The Nicaraguan dictatorship officially announced the release and expulsion from the country of Bishop Rolando Álvarez, who had been detained since August 19, 2022.

In a statement, the current regime of the country expressed deep gratitude «to His Holiness, Pope Francis; to the Secretariat of State of the Holy See; to its head, Cardinal, His Eminence Most Reverend Pietro Parolin, and to his Working Team, for the very respectful and discreet coordination efforts made to make possible the journey to the Vatican of two Bishops, fifteen Priests, and two Seminarians.»

Indeed, Bishop Isidoro del Carmen Mora, along with the following priests and seminarians, are also released:

 

 

 

The release and expulsion from Nicaragua come after Pope Francis, on January 8th, denounced before the Diplomatic Corps of the entire world the following: «The situation in Nicaragua continues to be a cause for concern; it is a crisis that has been ongoing for a long time with painful consequences for Nicaraguan society as a whole, particularly for the Catholic Church. The Holy See continues to urge for a diplomatic dialogue that respects the well-being of Catholics and the entire population.»
