(ZENIT News / London, 10.07.2024).- Saint Mary’s Cathedral in Middlesbrough was the scene of an unforgettable night the first weekend of July, as the award winning classical singing group “The Priests” gave their last concert on terra firma of the United Kingdom, as part of a farewell tour.

The emotive evening, which inaugurated a  series of concerts in the church of Coulby Newham, included a varied repertoire of religious, classical, Irish and pop songs. “The Priests,” whose homonymous album debut in 2008 became the best-selling classical performance in the United Kingdom, delighted those present with their extraordinary interpretation.

Canon Paul Farrer, the Cathedral’s Dean, highlighted the importance of the event. “The concert was a delight from beginning to end and it reminded us of what we can achieve when we unite as a community. We are called to be joyful witnesses of life in relationship with God. Hundreds of us did so that  night.”

Not only was the concert a musical success, but also a logistics and community triumph. Canon Farrer expressed his gratitude to the priests, for dedicating their free time to sing before returning to their parishes for the weekend Masses, as well as the sound and light equipment, the Cathedral’s choir, and the numerous volunteers that made the event possible.

“Heidi Cummins, who attended the concert, expressed her gratitude saying: “They were fantastic and left all of us smiling and on high. It was all so well organized – an absolute joy!”

The public’s reaction on leaving the Cathedral was unanimous, having lived a very special occasion. Sheila Moore, a retired Middlesbrough teacher, said: “My Irish roots surfaced, and a cried for my father, who used to sing some of those songs. What wonderful voices! What are they going to do now? They cant simply stop.”

Adele Gittins, of Redcar, said: “It was wonderful. I already have their CDs, but to see them live was simply incredible.” Jean Reeve, of Acklam, added: “It was a brilliant performance. I enjoyed every moment. It was humorous, the singing was beautiful and I also enjoyed the pianist.”

Beyond the music, “The Priests” have left a legacy of generosity. Most of their musical income goes to a Charity Trust, which has helped to build schools in Cambodia, Uganda and Thailand, in addition to supporting retired priests and homeless people.

These three priests, who were awarded an MBE (Order of the British Empire) in 2020, continue serving as full time parish priests in the Down and Connor Dioceses.
