(ZENIT News / Vatican City, 12.03.2024).- On December 2 and 3, the Council of Cardinals convened at Casa Santa Marta in Vatican City for a pivotal session under the leadership of Pope Francis. The gathering, which included the cardinals of the Council and the Secretary, delved into pressing issues shaping the Church and its global mission.

A Collegial Church: Strengthening Local and Global Ties

One of the primary topics discussed was collegiality within the Church. Cardinal Marcello Semeraro spearheaded conversations on the intricate relationship between local Churches and broader ecclesial assemblies. This dialogue highlighted the importance of unity while embracing the diversity of individual dioceses in a spirit of collaboration.

Reflecting on the Synod and Women’s Role in the Church

In the wake of the recently concluded Synod on Synodality, the Council engaged in a reflective discussion on its outcomes and implications. A significant portion of the meeting centered on the evolving role of women within the Church. Building on insights from the Council’s last four sessions, members sought to synthesize ideas for greater inclusion and representation of women in ecclesial and decision-making roles.

«Praedicate Evangelium» and Missionary Synodality

The Council turned its attention to the implementation of Praedicate Evangelium, Pope Francis’ Apostolic Constitution, focusing on its application within diocesan curias. In tandem, Cardinal Oswald Gracias led an exploration of the role of Papal Representatives in fostering a synodal and missionary ethos. This discussion emphasized the need for adaptability and renewed purpose among Church diplomats in a rapidly changing world.

Global Reflections Amidst Crisis

Beyond administrative matters, the Council provided an opportunity for cardinals from diverse regions to share insights on the state of the Church worldwide. Reflecting on areas beset by conflict, economic disparity, and social crises, the discussions underscored both the challenges and the hope present in the Church’s mission across continents.

Looking Ahead

The Vatican Press Office described the session as a valuable moment for collective reflection, emphasizing the Council’s role in shaping the Church’s response to global concerns. The next Council of Cardinals meeting is scheduled for April 2025, promising further deliberation on these critical topics.

This gathering reaffirmed the Pope’s commitment to a synodal, inclusive, and mission-driven Church, grounded in service to a complex and often divided world.
