Director of the Vatican press office, Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, this morning briefed journalists on three upcoming Vatican meetings: the Council of Cardinals, the Council for Economics, and the Commission for the Protection of Children.

The Vatican spokesman said the Council of Cardinals has “continued its work according to the planned schedule» which will be completed later this afternoon.

An initial review of the Pontifical Councils has been completed, he said, and this morning the cardinals met with Cardinal Lorenzo Baldisseri, current Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops, who reported on synod preparations. Part of the time was dedicated to determining what should be done between now and the next meeting, scheduled for early July.

The new Council for Economics will have its first meeting next Friday, May 2, in the Bologna Hall of the Apostolic Palace. The Holy Father will give an introductory speech to participants. The council meeting will focus on its statutes and work program, said the Vatican spokesman, stressing it is “organizational.” The meeting will last all day on Friday.

The new Commission for the Protection of Children will have a first meeting in the coming days, from May 1 -3 at the Domus Santa Marta. It is expected to reflect on the nature and purposes of the Commission and the possibility of integration with other representative members from around the world. The Holy Father will greet the members of the Commission. (D.C.L.)
