FRANKFURT, Germany, OCT. 15, 2001 (Zenit.org).- The sale of religious books in Germany has increased steadily over the past six years, say publishers at Frankfurt´s International Book Fair.

The Oct. 10-15 fair gathered publishers from around the world who presented their new projects.

Eugen Emmerling of the German Booksellers Association regarded the increased sale of religious books as a positive trend. Sales since 1995 have grown «not sensationally but constantly,» to 5.6% from 4.9% of the books produced in Germany, he said.

According to Pit Stenmans, director of the Association of Catholic Media, which has a catalogue of 20,000 titles, readers are not looking for scientific texts on theology but for more spirituality and practical advice.

What sells best is «practical liturgy,» as well as books on prayer and meditation, Franciscan literature, children´s religious works and calendars, Stenmans said.
