«We welcome the recent undertakings given by the Prime Minister, specifically, to deal with Saddam Hussein using the mechanisms of the United Nations and to avoid precipitate military action,» the statement said.
It concluded: «Mindful of Catholic teaching that sees war only as a last resort when no other options remain, we recall the words of Pope John Paul II in 1982 when he reminded us that the scale and horror of modern warfare made it an unacceptable means of settling differences between nations.»
