Pope Francis does nothing to hide his enthusiasm for soccer and admits that his favorite team is San Lorenzo de Almagro, one of the top teams in his native Argentina.
However, seeing a few Brazillian flags in the crowds of pilgrims during the July 8, 2018, noonday Angelus, he offered a bit of encouragement to fans who were likely discouraged by Brazil’s 2-1 loss to Belgium in the World Cup of Soccer quarterfinals on July 6.
“I see Brazilian flags . . . I greet the Brazilians: courage!” the Pope declared. “It will happen another time”
Brazil is the only national team to have played in every World Cup and leads the world with five championships. Argentina lost this year in the the round of 16, 4-3 to France.
