Archbishop Veglio, 63, has worked in the Vatican diplomatic service since 1968, when he began to serve in Peru, the Philippines and Senegal. Since 1997, he had been apostolic nuncio in Lebanon and Kuwait, and apostolic delegate in the Arab Peninsula.

Last November, the Holy Father named Patriarch Ignace Moussa I Daoud of Antioch of the Syrians as prefect of the congregation.

The congregation is a unifying link with the Eastern Catholic Churches, to foster their growth, safeguard their rights, and keep the Eastern Christian tradition alive and whole in the Catholic Church.

Some of these Churches have other rites, and another discipline — some accept the ordination of married men. All acknowledge the Pope´s primacy.
