Bishop Gregory Extends Sympathy to People of Milwaukee Archdiocese

WASHINGTON, D.C., MAY 27, 2002 (Zenit.org).- The head of the U.S. bishops´ conference published a note of sympathy for the people of the Milwaukee Archdiocese after sex-abuse allegations forced out Archbishop Rembert Weakland.

Bishop Wilton Gregory, president of the bishops´ conference, issued this statement Friday:

«I am deeply saddened by the news from the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. It comes at a time when the Church in our country is suffering greatly from what seems to be an unending series of revelations and accusations. On behalf of all of the Bishops of the United States, I extend my deepest sympathy to the people of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. They are very much in our hearts and prayers at this difficult time.»

Auxiliary Bishop Richard Sklba will temporarily lead the 685,000 Catholics in the Milwaukee Archdiocese until a new archbishop is installed, the Associated Press reported.
