Bishop Burke, who has been appointed archbishop of St. Louis, said the letters were supposed to be confidential, and were not meant as a public reprimand, the Chicago Tribune reported.

«I have no regrets whatsoever,» he said. «It was my duty as bishop to write those letters.»

He told the lawmakers to refrain from receiving Communion if their votes on abortion and other issues continue to be at odds with the faith.
