The decision was made May 27 when the Pope received in audience Cardinal Francisco Javier Errázuriz Ossa and Bishop Andres Stanovnik, president and interim secretary-general of CELAM, respectively.

CELAM's statement did not reveal the specific theme of the conference.

The last conference was held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in 1992.
