Benedict XVI Offers Mass for John Paul II

VATICAN CITY, MAY 2, 2005 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI celebrated a Mass for the eternal rest of his predecessor Pope John Paul II on the one-month anniversary of his death and later prayed at his tomb.

The Holy See reported that the Holy Father celebrated the Eucharist in his private chapel in the Apostolic Palace. John Paul II’s longtime personal secretary, Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz, participated in the Mass today.

The Vatican press office said that at 7 p.m. Benedict XVI went to the Vatican Grottoes, where John Paul II’s mortal remains rest, to pray for a few minutes.

Cardinal Francesco Marchisano, archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica, also celebrated a Mass for the deceased Pope in the basilica.
