New Diocese Established in India

JAIPUR, India, JULY 20, 2005 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI has established the new Indian diocese of Jaipur and appointed Coadjutor Bishop Oswald Lewis of Meerut as its first prelate.

The Diocese of Jaipur has been carved out of the Diocese of Ajmer-Jaipur. Its see is Jaipur, the capital of the state of Rajasthan, the Vatican press office announced today.

Oswald Lewis was born on July 30, 1944. He was named as coadjutor of Meerut in November 1997 and ordained a bishop the following April.

The Pope is currently vacationing in the Italian Alps.
