Romanian University Honors Pope

CLUJ, Romania, NOV. 6, 2005 (Zenit.org).- The University of Cluj conferred an honorary doctorate on Benedict XVI «as sign of recognition of his theological and philosophical work,» says Vatican Radio.

Andrei Marga, president of the Academic Council of the Romanian university, cited as reasons for the degree the contribution of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger’s thought to affirming «the values of the Christian world and the Judeo-Christian tradition.»

Marga said that the university’s intention to confer the doctorate had matured by mid-2004, long before Cardinal Ratzinger was elected Pope last April.
