Missionary: 200,000 Haitians Will Die if Unaided

Father Antonio Menegon told Fides that "the situation is deteriorating further and further on the island."

He reported that violence is also "raging throughout the country following the outcome of the elections."

For this reason, foreign embassies, ports and airports are closed, and roads have been blocked.

"We cannot supply medicines or oil, everything is closed," the priest said.

He continued: "Our hospital continues to welcome people sick with cholera. Some have died, others recovered.

"In one family, during a funeral vigil where they did not know that the deceased had died of cholera, 25 have died. We working with other hospitals to try to curb these emergencies, but everything is very complicated."

The missionary reported that 2,100 Haitians have died of this cholera epidemic thus far. He appealed for further aid to stem the tragedy.
