VATICAN CITY, JAN. 6, 2011 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI appointed several new members to various Vatican dicasteries, assigning positions mainly to the newest cardinals created in the recent consistory.

On Dec. 29 the Pope appointed two new members for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith: Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for Saints’ Causes; and Cardinal Kurt Koch, president of the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity.

The Vatican announced the appointment of Cardinal Koch to the Congregation for Eastern Churches as well, along with Cardinal Antonios Naguib, patriarch of Alexandria of the Copts, Egypt; and Cardinal Francesco Monterisi, archpriest of Rome’s Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. 

Cardinal Naguib was also named to the Pontifical Council for Migrants and Travelers. 

For the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments, the Pontiff named as members: Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz, archbishop of Warsaw, Poland; Cardinal Albert Malcolm Ranjith Patabendige Don, archbishop of Colombo, Sri Lanka; Cardinal Angelo Amato; Cardinal Raymond Burke, prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature; Cardinal Mauro Piacenza, prefect of the Congregation for Clergy; and Cardinal Velasio De Paolis, president of the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See.

Cardinal Burke was also appointed as a member of the Congregation for Bishops. 

Cardinal Piacenza was named to the Congregation for Catholic Education as well. 

Cardinal De Paolis was given an additional assignment as member of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature. 

The prelate was also named to the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts, along with Cardinal Raymond Burke. 

As members of the Congregation for Saints’ Causes, the Holy Father named: Cardinal Francesco Monterisi; Cardinal Fortunato Baldelli, penitentiary major of the Apostolic Penitentiary; and Cardinal Paolo Sardi, vice chamberlain of the Apostolic Chamber and patron of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. 

Cardinal Sardi was also designated to serve in the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.

Three prelates were appointed members of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples: Cardinal Medardo Joseph Mazombwe, former archbishop of Lusaka, Zambia; Cardinal Albert Malcolm Ranjith Patabendige Don; and Cardinal Robert Sarah, president of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum.

The Congregation for Clergy was given two new members: Cardinal Donald Wuerl, archbishop of Washington, and Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz.

Benedict XVI assigned several new members for the Pontifical Council Cor Unum: Cardinal Peter Turkson, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace; Cardinal Medardo Joseph Mazombwe; Archbishop Douglas Young of Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea; Monsignor Manfred Ertl, consultor of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum; Laurence de la Brosse, president of the Association Internationale des Charites; Father Simon Faddoul, president of Caritas Lebanon; Michael Thio Yauw Beng, president of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul — Council General International; Roberto Tarazona Ponte, of the Office of Pastoral Counseling of Caritas in Peru; Henrietta de Villa, consultor of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum; and Carlos Augusto de Oliveira Camargo, also consultor of the same dicastery.

As consultors of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, the Pope named: Father Paolo Asolan, professor at the Redemptor Hominis Pontifical Institute of Rome’s Pontifical Lateran University; Fater Silverio Nieto Nunez, director of the Civil Legal Services department of the Spanish Episcopal Conference; and Paolo Luca Beccegato, head of the international unit of Caritas Italy.

The Pontifical Council for the Laity was given three new members: Cardinal Paolo Romeo of Palermo, Italy; Cardinal Robert Sarah; and Cardinal Paolo Sardi.

Cardinal Donald Wuerl and Cardinal Angelo Amato were appointed to the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity.

The Pontiff appointed Cardinal Raúl Eduardo Vela Chiriboga, former archbishop of Quito, Ecuador as a member of the presidential committee of the Pontifical Council for the Family.

For the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, the Holy Father named: Cardinal Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya, archbishop of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo; Cardinal Reinhard Marx, archbishop of Munich and Freising, Germany; and Cardinal Robert Sarah.

As members of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, Benedict XVI named: Cardinal Kurt Koch and Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, president of the Pontifical Council for Culture, of the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church, and of the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology. 

Cardinal Ravasi was also appointed to the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization. 

The Pope named two members for the Pontifical Council for Social Communications: Cardinal Raymundo Damasceno Assis, archbishop of Aparecida, Brazil, and Cardinal Mauro Piacenza.

Cardinal Francesco Monterisi was appointed as a counselor of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.

The same commission received three new members: Cardinal Raúl Eduardo Vela Chiriboga, Cardinal Paolo Romeo, and Cardinal Raymundo Damasceno Assis.

The Pontiff appointed Monsignor Marcello Bartolucci, undersecretary of the Congregation for Saints’ Causes, as secretary of the same congregation, at the same time elevating him to the dignity of archbishop. 

The Holy Father named Father Boguslaw Turek, bureau chief of the Congregation for Saints’ Causes, as undersecretary of the same congregation.

Benedict XVI appointed Monsignor Celso Morga, undersecretary of the Congregation for Clergy, as secretary of the same congregation, at the same time elevating him to the dignity of archbishop. 

The Pope named Monsignor Serge Poitras, official of the Congregation for Bishops, as adjunct undersecretary of the same congregation.
