Bishop Named for Sault Sainte Marie

Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Marcel Damphousse of Alexandria-Cornwall, Ontario, as bishop of Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario.

He succeeds Bishop Jean-Louis Plouffe, whose resignation from the pastoral care of the same diocese upon reaching the age limit was accepted by the Holy Father.

The Diocese of Sault Sainte Marie has a population of about 436,000, some 239,000 of whom are Catholic. They are served by 90 priests, and some 65 permanent deacons as well as about 175 religious.
