Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Ignazio Sanna, Archbishop Emeritus of Oristano (Sardinia, Italy) and Academic ad Honorem of the Pontifical Academy, President of the Pontifical Academy of Theology.
The Pontifical Academy of Theology was founded in Rome and received its first statutes of Clement XI, in 1718. Created as the headquarters of the sacred sciences in order to train well-trained theologians.
Its mission is to promote the dialogue between faith and reason, as well as to deepen the Christian doctrine, following the indications of the Holy Father, who has identified the current tasks for theology in numbers 92-99 of the Encyclical Fides et Ratio , to present the Christian message in a way that corresponds to the demands of our time.
The Italian pastor was ordained a priest in the parish church of Orune on March 11, 1967, and elected to the metropolitan seat of Oristano on April 22, 2006. He was ordained a bishop in the Cathedral Santa María Asunta de Oristano, on June 25 of 2006.
The priest has been President of the Episcopal Commission of the Italian Episcopal Conference for the Doctrine of the Faith the announcement of catechesis.
Bishop Sanna has studied at the Episcopal Seminary of Nuoro, from 1954 to 1959; in the Regional Seminary of Cuglieri (Nu) (1959-1963); in the Major Roman Seminary (1963-1968).
He also trained at the Ecclesiastical Academy from 1968 to 1972; and has graduated in Theology, Philosophy, from the University of La Sapienza; in Canon Law, and has a Diploma in the Ecclesiastical Academy, as well as seasoning in foreign languages at the Goethe Ecclesiastical Academy Institute.
