While thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square on March 1 to pray the noonday Angelus with Pope Francis, the Holy Father’s heart was on the thousands of displaced people moving around the world due to war.

“I am somewhat saddened by the news arriving of so many displaced people,” said after praying the Angelus. “So many men, women, and children chased away because of the war, so many migrants that ask for refuge in the world, and help. In these days, it has become very strong. Let us pray for them.”

Pope Francis’ appeal for prayers comes as hundreds of migrants are reportedly headed through permeable borders to Greece from Turkey, and thousands more are gathered on the Turkish side seeking entry after Ankara relaxed curbs on their movement, according to Vatican News. At least 500 people had arrived by sea on three Greek islands close to the Turkish coast within a few hours on Sunday morning.
