(ZENIT News / Madrid, 12.11.2023).- Bishop Ángel Pérez Pueyo of Barbastro made an important announcement on December 8 during the homily for the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception at the Sanctuary of Torreciudad.

The announcement was that, following his recent visit to Rome with the entire Spanish episcopate to discuss seminaries with the Pope, it had been confirmed that the Sanctuary of Torreciudad will become a diocesan sanctuary. The event was self-described as “a gift.”

In a portion of the homily, the prelate took care to emphasize that the proceedings had been carried out in accordance with the law. As is known, due to the pastoral work of the Prelature of Opus Dei being instrumental in the growth and development of the site, there had been a discrepancy regarding the ownership of the most important Marian place of worship in the diocese of Barbastro.

In the process of disassociation, Bishop Pérez Pueyo appointed a diocesan rector for the Sanctuary of Torreciudad last August. He was the first rector who did not come from the clergy of Opus Dei.
