John Paul II again encouraged dialogue between Christians and Jews, on the occasion of Italy´s celebration of the Day for Judeo-Christian Friendship.

This initiative of the Italian bishops´ conference and the Jewish communities in Italy began 12 years ago, to foster reflection and mutual understanding between the faiths. Meetings and conferences, attended by cardinals, bishops, rabbis and leader of Jewish communities, were held throughout Italy to mark the event.

«In expressing my appreciation and support for this initiative of the Italian Church, I very much desire that it will contribute to the development of an authentic Judeo-Christian dialogue,» the bishop of Rome said during his Wednesday general audience.
