«The arrival of the apostolic nuncio, Bishop Pierre Christophe, among us here in Uganda, has called forth great joy and commotion,» said Father Tarcisio Pazzaglia, Comboni missionary of the parish church of Kitgum.
The bishop, who arrived in the small Acholi town, was welcomed by the Gulu Archbishop John Baptist Odama and the local authorities, among others.
Over the weekend, Bishop Christophe visited the parish of Christ the King, the Comboni mission, hospitals, two host centers for former child-soldiers, and even Omya-Anyima, a parish church 40 kilometers (25 miles) east of Kitgum, recently devastated by rebels of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).
Father Pazzaglia told the Misna missionary agency that a march for peace would be held today in Kitgum, organized by the children who found shelter there. The apostolic nuncio, Archbishop Odama and other local Catholic religious figures were expected to join in the march.
The Comboni missionary confirmed the news of the liberation in the past few days of 150 children abducted by the LRA in the Lira and Kitgum districts.
