The Holy Father sent a telegram of condolences upon the death August 5, 2017 of Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi, who passed away at age 83.
The telegram went to His Eminence Cardinal Angelo Scola, apostolic administrator, and to His Excellency Msgr. Mario Delpini, archbishop elect.
“Upon learning of the passing of dear Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi, I wish to express my condolences to the relatives of this diocesan community, which includes him among her most illustrious sons and among her most amiable and beloved pastors,” the Pope wrote. “He distinguished himself as a caring pastor, totally devoted to the needs and the good of all priests and faithful, with special attention to themes of the family, marriage and bioethics, in which he was particularly expert.”
Cardinal Tettamanzi was named a cardinal in 1998. He was Archbishop of Genoa from 1995 to 2002 and Archbishop of Milan from 2002 to 2011.
