The Holy Father on April 25, 2019, named Rev. Marco Tin Win, of the clergy of Mandalay, currently vicar general, to be the new archbishop of the diocese.
The archbishop-elect was born in Mon Hla, district of Shwebo, in the Archdiocese of Mandalay in 1960, and carried out his philosophical and theological studies in Saint Joseph’s Major Seminary in Yangon. He was ordained a priest on September 22, 1987, and holds a doctorate in philosophy from the Pontifical Urban University, Rome.
Since ordination, he has held a number of pastoral and administrative roles, including diocesan director for interreligious dialogue, rector of the Saint Thomas Preparatory Seminary of Mandalay, diocesan bursar, parish priest of the parish of Mary, Help of Christians in Sagaing, and executive secretary of the Episcopal Conference in Yangon. He is currently vicar general, rector of the Cathedral of Mandalay and lecturer in philosophy at Saint Joseph’s Major Seminary in Pyin Oo Lwin.
Cardinal Charles Bo of Yangon, welcomed the appointment with the following statement:

“It is with great joy I warmly welcome the grace-filled news from our Holy Father that he has chosen Mgr. Marco Tin Win to be the next Archbishop of Mandalay Archdiocese.

“Today is the feast of apostle Mark. May the glorious example of the evangelist guide our new Archbishop.

“Mgr. Marco Tin Win brings to his mission, decades of quality service to Church in Myanmar as professor of Philosophy and as an able administrator, both at the national Bishop Conference and Mandalay Archdiocese.

“His deep spirituality, his friendship with monks and his efforts at dialogue with religions and culture are the timely gifts he brings to Myanmar.  His simplicity, affability and erudite scholarship will empower the great Archdiocese of Mandalay.

“With the people of Mandalay, we rejoice at this good news.  As we warmly congratulate the archbishop-elect, we accompany him with prayers and best wishes.”
