Ukraine Abolishes Death Penalty

KIEV, Ukraine, SEPT. 3, 2001 (Zenit.org).- The Ukrainian Parliament has approved a new penal code that does not include the death penalty. The code has been ratified by President Leonid Kuchma.

When Ukraine joined the Council of Europe in 1995, it committed itself to abolish the death penalty in three years. Since then, 212 people have been executed, while 252 death sentences have been suspended.
