Cardinal Ruini Urges Bishops´ "Conversion" to Value Role of Laity

ROME, SEPT. 25, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Cardinal Camillo Ruini, president of the Italian episcopal conference, has called on the nation´s bishops to promote more active lay participation in the life of the Church.

«Only the recovery of profound Christian roots can restore the spiritual energies and moral weight that our society needs more than ever,» the cardinal told the bishops´ Permanent Commission on Monday.

Cardinal Ruini, the Pope´s vicar for the Rome Diocese, called for «pastoral conversion,» which implies «an endeavor to appreciate the Christian laity,» an idea that «has found its most appropriate sacramental foundation in the ecclesiology of Vatican II.»
